The seconds that happen between a crisis event occurring and calm being reestablished, are critical. The goal of “Rapid Emergency Response” is to organize communication and response time so that safety can be resumed as soon as possible.
Since 1980, more than 300 people have been killed in school shootings. Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary, nothing has changed with regard to school safety (only battles around stricter gun laws). Yet, we spend billions as a nation protecting our banks, cars and homes. When will we do the same for our children?
The Rapid Emergency Response Program will effectively assist school personnel with communication and give law enforcement the vital information they need to protect students and staff.
First and most importantly it will notify all staff about a lock down within five seconds. The quicker a school can effectively lock down, the more people we can save. The staff will be able to initiate a lock down from anywhere in the building. Unlike most duress systems that are at desks only, staff will carry this badge just like an ID card. When an emergency occurs, the real time location will allow appropriate personnel and law enforcement know exactly where help is being initiated.
Staff will be able to send critical messages to alert the appropriate personnel or trained teams to such non lock down emergencies such as a school fight or medical emergency.
The Ekahau safety badge system is noninvasive and simple to use. The system uses any existing WIFI to establish communication between staff, administration and local law enforcement dispatch. It can be completely customized to fit your school or organization's needs. There are three safety components that can be programmed for almost any situation you can imagine. At Skyview High School, we chose to use the pull down switch for lockdown (notifies all staff and dispatch within seconds that the school is in a lockdown situation). The two buttons are programmed for medical and safety emergencies (that do not require the school to be placed in lockdown). For example, if a staff member presses the blue button, this signals they have a medical emergency, such as an injured student. Pressing the red button, signals a safety emergency, such as a student under the influence or a student fight. Within seconds, security and/or medical staff can respond to the emergency.
